More than 30 students vied for the top honors at this year’s SkillsUSA WA Aerospace Assembler Competition held this weekend at Boeing’s Everett plant. The SkillsUSA event puts students to the test to highlight the assembly skills they have been practicing as part of the Core Plus curriculum offered in the high schools across the state. Students also participate in mock interviews and resume reviews with an aim of preparing them for in-demand manufacturing jobs.
Lindbergh High School senior MuMu Chuol walked away with a double win, capturing top honors at the competition and securing a job at The Boeing company.
“I got the job for Boeing as a mechanic the other day. It feels amazing, a lot kids in my classes do not know what they want to do. For me to have plan, I am executing it right now to where I can potentially get a job two weeks after graduation. I feel like I took a great path,” said Chuol.
His local win now sends Chuol to the national competition.
John Turner, a Boeing manager on the Workforce Development team explained the event, “Skills USA is student-led organization which has competitions in different skilled areas. Students can come from the manufacturing community to compete in the areas of assembly or aviation maintenance. Boeing is really invested with our partner programs in the state of Washington with the CorePlus curriculum which is a two year program that teaches kids foundational skills that they would need to pursue manufacturing careers. This is the second annual competition we have held at the Everett site. I am very excited to have the students here.”
